Gold filled is also known as rolled gold. It is a more durable ,high quality alternative to fine gold at a more affordable price. Made by bonding 14 k gold (at least 5% gold)to a solid brass core. This is a far superior coating than a regular gold  plated jewellery piece which may be coated with a microscopic layer of gold. 

In contrast gold vermeil is a sterling silver piece which has been plated in gold. Most of these pieces have been coated in a 2.5/ 3 micron thickness of gold which is above industry standard and if taken care of properly can last much longer than your regular gold plated piece.
